Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is stepping into his shoes with Gajini. But do you want to know the original protagonist of the Tamil film popularly known as Surya in the Tamil film industry. The eldest son of Tamil one time super hero Shivakumar, Surya has 2 younger siblings-Kathirk and Brinda. Born in Coimbatore and schooled at St. Bede’s, he graduated from Loyala college in Chennai before working in a garment factory as a sales executive. On his father’s insistence, he complete his education before entering filmdom in 1997.
A few years later, Surya even chose to settle down with his all time favoutire movie partner and best friend Jothika in 2006 and were blessed with a beautiful daughter Diya in 2007. Surya has been a very sober boy at school but thoroughly enjoyed college life. Of course, he learnt a lot from that environment. The campus was something that had a rural and urban flavour, so it was like a community of people sharing and learning together. He fondly remembers that form a front bencher, in the first year, he became a back bencher.
The most fascinating memory was when Surya walked back into the campus as a celebrity. he is very proud of his father and his role in forming their lives, for he always reminded them to grow recalls Surya. ‘Dad shared all his hardships, his struggles his growth both in his career and in life, with all of us. So, we grew up as well informed children. I have picked up some of dad’s skills but my brother Karthi is more like my father in terms of profession and personal life,’ says Surya. In his latest movie Vaaranam Aayiram, he plays a groom who gets married accompanied by 1000 elephants. It is also the first Tamil movie and the nation’s second [after Hrithik Roshan's Lakshya] to be shot extensively at Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.
This is a story of a 64 year old father and a 16 year old son, both played wonderfully by Surya, who feels that every role he has done is special in some way or other and tough doing it.His leisure time is again related to films, mostly watching a lot of films. It won’t be totally wrong if we say his role models are Kamal Hasan, Revathy, Aamir Khan, and not to forget his father. Let’s not forget Surya’s accomplishment in the form of awards-Tamil Nadu State Award for Nandha, Tamil Nadu State Award again for Gajini, Filmfare Award for Perazhagan for best actro, Filmfare Award for best supporting actor Pitamagan and Vijay Awards as the Icon of the year 2007 are surely noteworthy. Vikram has always been his best friend, someone whom he cannot do without!
